Bagdogra to Bhutan by Road: Route, Border Crossing and Own-Car Rules

November 3, 2026
11 min read min read

Bagdogra to Bhutan by road is the most popular way for Indian travellers to enter the country, and it is simpler than most people expect. You drive about 165 km from Bagdogra airport to the border town of Phuentsholing, cross on foot or by car, and then climb about 170 km into the mountains to Thimphu or Paro.

We are a licensed tour operator based in Thimphu, and Phuentsholing is where many of our Indian guests start their trip. This guide covers the full route, every way to reach the border, the border steps, the rules for driving your own car, and a ready 7-day plan.

Why start from Bagdogra?

Bagdogra airport (IXB) near Siliguri is the closest airport to Phuentsholing, Bhutan's main land border with India. Flights land from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and other cities, so you can leave home in the morning and sleep in Bhutan that night.

If you are coming by train, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is about 155 km from the border, and Hasimara station is only about 18 km away. Either way, the road from Siliguri onwards is the same.

Bagdogra to Thimphu: the route at a glance

The trip has two very different halves. Day one runs across the flat plains and tea gardens of north Bengal. Day two climbs from about 300 metres at Phuentsholing to over 2,300 metres in Thimphu, on a winding mountain highway.

You can drive the whole way in one long day, but we do not recommend it. Siliguri traffic and the border formalities eat time, and the mountain road is best driven in daylight.

Day 1: Bagdogra to Phuentsholing

There are four ways to reach the Phuentsholing border from Bagdogra and the wider region. Pick by budget, group size and how much time you have.

Four ways to reach Phuentsholing from India: taxi from Bagdogra, train to Hasimara, bus from Siliguri, or flight to Paro

Taxi from Bagdogra airport

A private taxi from Bagdogra to Phuentsholing covers about 165 km in 4.5 to 5.5 hours and usually drops you at the Bhutan Gate in Jaigaon. It is the easiest option for families and groups, because the fare is shared and you avoid changing vehicles with luggage. Leave the airport by early afternoon so you reach the border before dark.

Bus from Siliguri

Bhutanese buses run daily from Siliguri to Phuentsholing in 4 to 6 hours. They leave from a stand near Golden Plaza on Burdwan Road rather than the main Tenzing Norgay bus terminus, and there are only a few departures a day, so check times at the counter a day ahead. Indian state and private buses also run to Jaigaon.

Train to Hasimara

Hasimara is the nearest railway station to the border, about 18 km away. The overnight Kanchankanya Express from Sealdah in Kolkata stops there, and several trains a day run from Siliguri and NJP. From Hasimara, a shared or reserved auto reaches the Jaigaon gate in 20 to 30 minutes.

Or skip the road: fly Bagdogra to Paro

Drukair flies directly from Bagdogra to Paro in about 50 minutes on selected days of the week. It costs more than the road, but it saves a full day and lands you straight in the Paro valley.

Crossing the Jaigaon to Phuentsholing border

Jaigaon and Phuentsholing are twin towns separated by the ornate Bhutan Gate. For Indian travellers on foot, the crossing happens at the Pedestrian Terminal, which is open 24 hours a day.

Four steps to cross the Jaigaon to Phuentsholing border into Bhutan

  1. Walk through the Bhutan Gate to the Pedestrian Terminal in Phuentsholing.
  2. Show your ID: an original Indian passport with at least six months of validity, or an original Voter ID card, plus two passport-size photographs. Children under 18 can use a passport or birth certificate and must travel with a parent or legal guardian.
  3. Pay the SDF and collect your entry permit. The Sustainable Development Fee is ₹1,200 per adult per night and ₹600 for children aged 6 to 11; under-6s are free. A user fee of Nu. 10 per person is charged on each entry through the terminal. If you applied online in advance, show your approved permit instead.
  4. Meet your guide. Your certified guide meets you at the terminal and travels with you beyond Rinchending Checkpost, the edge of the Phuentsholing zone.

To save time, apply for the permit online on Bhutan's immigration portal before you travel, or let your tour operator do it. Our full guide to the Bhutan SDF for Indians explains the fee, child rates and refunds.

Travel insurance is no longer mandatory under Bhutan's tourism rules, but the Consulate General of India in Phuentsholing still advises it, and domestic cover can be bought at the terminal.

Where to stay in Phuentsholing

Most travellers spend their first night in Phuentsholing. Tourists must stay in accommodation certified by Bhutan's Department of Tourism for the whole trip, so book a certified hotel rather than a guesthouse in Jaigaon. If you arrive early, visit Kharbandi Gompa on the hill above town for a wide view over Phuentsholing and the plains.

Day 2: Phuentsholing to Thimphu

The Phuentsholing to Thimphu road is one of the most scenic drives in the country. It takes 5 to 6 hours for about 170 km, climbing from the steamy foothills into pine forest.

Paro valley scenery, reached from Chuzom on the road from Phuentsholing

  • Kharbandi Gompa: about 10 minutes out of town, with views back over the plains.
  • Gedu and Chukha: small hill towns where the road clings to forested slopes. Chukha is also home to one of Bhutan's major hydropower projects.
  • Bunakha: a common lunch stop roughly halfway.
  • Chuzom: the confluence of the Thimphu and Paro rivers, marked by three chortens. Turn right for Paro or continue about an hour up the valley to Thimphu.

The road is well surfaced but full of bends. Carry motion-sickness tablets for children, start early to avoid afternoon fog in the monsoon, and keep snacks and water in the car.

Driving your own car or bike into Bhutan

Indian-registered cars and motorbikes are allowed into Bhutan, and many Indians drive in from Siliguri. The rules below come from the Consulate General of India in Phuentsholing and Bhutan's Department of Tourism.

Rules for Indian-registered cars and bikes entering Bhutan, including the Nu. 4,500 daily green tax

  • Green tax: Nu. 4,500 per vehicle per day once you go beyond Rinchending Checkpost. Driving inside the Phuentsholing zone is free.
  • Documents: original driving licence, registration certificate, vehicle insurance, and emission and roadworthiness certificates. The vehicle must be no more than 10 years old. If you are not the owner, carry an authority letter.
  • CPMS registration: vehicles must be registered on Bhutan's Check Post Management System to pass police checkpoints.
  • Guide: a certified guide must travel with you for the whole trip. A valid Indian driving licence is accepted for self-driving.

Visiting Phuentsholing for a day

If you only want to pop across from Jaigaon, you do not need an entry permit or SDF. Day visitors can stay up to 24 hours inside Phuentsholing as far as Rinchending Checkpost. You need a one-time online pre-registration, which gives you a QR code to show at immigration. Go beyond Rinchending and the normal permit, SDF and guide rules apply.

Other road entry points from India

Phuentsholing is the main crossing, but Indians can also enter by road at three other points:

For most first trips to Thimphu, Paro and Punakha, Phuentsholing via Bagdogra is still the most practical choice.

Tips for the road

  1. Arrive at the border in daylight. Permits, hotel check-in and finding your guide are easier before evening.
  2. Avoid Siliguri at rush hour. Traffic around the city can add an hour.
  3. Carry original documents. Photocopies and phone photos are not accepted; Aadhaar is not valid ID for Bhutan.
  4. Set your watch. Bhutan is 30 minutes ahead of India.
  5. Carry rupees in small notes. Indian rupees are accepted across Bhutan. You can carry up to ₹25,000 in notes of ₹500 or less; anything above that must be in ₹100 notes or smaller.
  6. Buy a local SIM. Indian SIM cards work poorly once you leave the border; buy a B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM in Phuentsholing.
